What a moissanite watch actually is

A moissanite watch is a timepiece whose case, bezel, dial or bracelet is set with moissanite — silicon carbide, a lab-created gemstone with a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale and a refractive index of 2.65–2.69, higher than diamond's 2.42. In practical terms that means two things: the stones do not scratch or cloud with daily wear, and they throw more colored light ("fire") than a diamond of the same size. It is the only diamond alternative that behaves like a gemstone rather than like glass.

That distinction matters because most "iced out" watches under $500 are set with crystal or cubic zirconia. They look sharp on day one and dull within a year. Moissanite is a different category of material, which is why every watch on this page carries a GRA (Gemological Research Association) certificate for its stones and why the price sits where it does.

Two series, one standard

The Liora is a 33.5 × 42.5 mm rectangular case in 304 stainless steel with IP plating, a genuine leather strap and a clasp that carries its own moissanite stones. It comes in five dial colors — Pearl, Emerald, Ruby, Amethyst and Rose. The Moissanite Editions are the fully iced-out men's designs from The Mogul and The Dynasty series, built with moissanite instead of the standard crystal setting: Rainbow, Ice Royal, Full Ice, Camino, Sovereign Ice, Vine and Thorn Ice.

Will a moissanite watch pass a diamond tester?

Usually, yes — and it is worth understanding why rather than treating it as a trick. Handheld "diamond testers" measure thermal conductivity. Moissanite conducts heat almost exactly like diamond, so a thermal pen registers it as diamond. Only a multi-tester that also measures electrical conductivity will separate the two, and a jeweler with a loupe can spot moissanite's double refraction. We say this plainly because we sell moissanite as moissanite: a stone that outperforms diamond on fire and costs a fraction of it, not a stone pretending to be something else.

How our watches are made

Stones are set by hand in our Brooklyn atelier. Each watch goes through the same checks before it ships: a movement accuracy test, a cosmetic inspection of crystal and case under magnification, and a function check of the crown, date wheel and clasp. Every Liora ships with its GRA certificate; every Moissanite Edition ships with an individually numbered GRA certificate of authenticity. Both are covered by United Jewel's two-year international warranty against manufacturing defects.

The honest summary: a diamond watch is a store of value you wear; a crystal watch is a look you replace; a moissanite watch is the look of the first at the upkeep of neither. If you want the sparkle without the insurance rider, this is the material.

Choosing between the two series

Choose the Liora if you want a refined everyday watch — a slim 10 mm rectangular case, leather strap, sapphire crystal and a dial that reads as jewelry first. It was designed for women, and most of our customers buy it for themselves rather than as a gift. Choose a Moissanite Edition if you want full coverage: case, dial and bracelet set edge to edge, 42–50 mm cases, push-button hidden clasps and the kind of presence that reads across a room. Rainbow, with its multicolor stone-set indexes, is the one design that sells almost equally to women and men.

Caring for a moissanite watch

Moissanite needs no special treatment. Wipe the case and stones with a soft microfiber cloth after wear; use warm water and a drop of dish soap with a soft brush for a deeper clean, then dry fully. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on any watch with a leather strap, and keep the crown pushed in before contact with water. Neither series is rated for swimming — 5 ATM and 3 ATM cover rain, hand-washing and daily wear, not immersion.

How to choose a moissanite watch: five things that matter

1. Stone certification. Ask for the certificate, not the adjective. "VVS", "D color" and "AAA" appear on listings that turn out to be crystal; a GRA or IGI certificate that names the stone as moissanite is what separates a gemstone watch from a costume one. Every watch here ships with one.

2. Setting method. Glued stones fall out; prong- or bead-set stones stay. Hand-setting is slower and costs more, and it is why a $1,249 moissanite watch and a $200 "moissanite" watch are not the same product even when the photographs look alike.

3. Case size and shape. Women's moissanite watches sit best at 30–36 mm on the short axis: the Liora's 33.5 mm rectangular case reads as jewelry, not equipment. Men's fully iced cases run 42–50 mm because the stones need surface area to read from a distance. Above 45 mm, measure your wrist; a large case on a small wrist looks borrowed.

4. Movement and crystal. A Japanese quartz movement (Miyota, Seiko/Epson) is the honest choice for a stone-set watch: accurate, thin, and a battery change every two or three years. Sapphire crystal resists scratches best; hardened mineral crystal is the standard on fully iced men's designs where the bezel stones, not the glass, take the knocks.

5. Who stands behind it. A US address, a named return policy, a real warranty and reviews you can trace. Marketplaces list thousands of "moissanite watches" from sellers who vanish; a brand with a Brooklyn address and a two-year warranty is answerable in a way a storefront is not.

Moissanite watches as gifts

A moissanite watch is one of the few jewelry gifts that works across occasions — anniversary, milestone birthday, graduation, a promotion — because it is worn daily rather than kept for events. Why moissanite and not diamond, lab diamond or CZ

Lab-grown diamond has made diamond-set watches cheaper than they were, but a fully set 42 mm lab-diamond watch still starts around $5,000 and the stones are, gram for gram, less brilliant than moissanite. Cubic zirconia is soft (8–8.5 Mohs), clouds within a year of daily wear and reads as glass on a tester. Moissanite sits between them on price and above both on fire. For a watch — an object that takes more abuse than a ring — that combination of hardness, brilliance and cost is why we build with it.
